Officers responded to a 911 call at about 1 a.m. Sunday for a woman stabbed inside an apartment building on Myrtle Avenue in Ridgewood.
Jennifer Irigoyen, 35, was found with stab wounds to her neck and torso inside the vestibule of the building.
She was pronounced dead at Wyckoff Hospital. Police say her unborn child did not survive.
On Friday, authorities announced that 48-year-old Anthony Hobson has been arrested and charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence, abortion, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Prosecutors say Hobson was seen on surveillance video dragging the victim into the stairwell of her building, where he repeatedly plunged a knife into her abdomen.
'This was a heinous crime,' District Attorney Richard Brown said. 'A woman was brutally stabbed, killing her and the unborn child. The defendant is alleged to have shown no mercy and no regard for human life when he repeatedly and purposely plunged a knife into this expectant mother's abdomen, torso and neck.'
Irigoyen was a real estate broker who also loved to dance and taught Zumba classes. She had another child who is 8 years old, and that child is now staying with the grandmother.
'Sweetheart, nice girl, paid her rent on time...good person,' building super Lisa Ramos said.
Ramos said there was blood in Irigoyen's apartment as well as the entrance to the building.

The mother of the missing 2-year-old and her boyfriend beat the child to death, according the arrest affidavit.
The arrest affidavit said that the couple was staying at a hotel in Houston when Hazana Anderson started crying on Oct. 19. The mother's boyfriend, Kenny Hewett, began to beat the child. The mother told police that Hewett told her to discipline her child, and she began to hit Hazana as well.
Hewett said he was not satisfied with how the mother, TiAundra Christon, had hit Hazana, so he started to beat the child some more.
The affidavit said Hazana began to go in and out of consciousness, so the couple put the 2-year-old in the bathtub and splashed water on her face, trying to revive her.
They realized Hazana had died, so they started using a hairdryer to try to revive her. The hair dryer just burned the deceased 2-year-old's skin.
They kept the child's body in the floorboard of her vehicle for three days. On Oct. 23, the couple put the girl in a trash bag, tied a rock to it and threw her in the lake.
Authorities found a corpse in a lake in the Houston area on Wednesday.
College Station police said it will take several weeks to positively identify the remains. It has not been confirmed if the remains are of 2-year-old Hazana Anderson.
College Station police arrested Christon. She originally told police that she left the child in the stroller near the lake, and she went missing.
Christon has been charged with child endangerment and false report to a police officer, according to online jail records. She was also charged with tampering with evidence with intent to impair a human corpse on Thursday.

Police said they are working with local, state and national agency to pursue any leads in locating the missing girl.
'This information, however insignificant it may seem, could be very important in helping us to locate Hazana, and our top priority and desire continues to be finding her,' they said in an email.
As police were searching Gabbard Park for 2-year-old Hazana Anderson, they found clothing and an object in a black bag in a nearby dumpster, the affidavit said. The clothes were the same ones that Hazana was reportedly wearing when she went missing. Christon told officers she did not know anything about the object that was found with the clothing.
The affidavit said evidence showed Christon had handled the bag that was found in the dumpster and that Christon also handled the object found in the bag.
When officers asked Christon about the discrepancies in her story, she continued to say she did not know anything about the object or where the girl is located.
Police said Christon appears to be withholding information that is vital to the location of the missing girl.
Police expanded their search for a missing 2-year-old in College Station on Sunday evening. They said they had completed their search in Gabbard Park and are extending it into surrounding neighborhoods on Sunday.
College Station police said that Hazana was last seen at Gabbard Park just after 9 a.m. She is about three feet tall and 28 pounds.
Hazana was last seen wearing an olive green jacket, black shirt with 'Girl Squad' on it, cream-colored pants, pink socks, dark pink shoes and a purple beanie.
Police said that the mother had taken Hazana to the park. The mother went back to her car to get a bottle and when she returned, Hazana was no longer in her stroller.
Hazana's father, Tabodrick Anderson, told KPRC he is shocked by the arrest of the girl's mother.
'When we were together I didn't see her doing anything like this,' Anderson said.
Anderson said once he and Christon broke up, she wasn't the committed mother she once was.
'She starting pushing off my daughter on me a lot more. She started disappearing, leaving my daughter for me for weeks,' Anderson told KPRC.

Hewett's bond is set at $500,000. Christon's bond was set at $750,000.
