UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) that was held on October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, part of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area.[4] Headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, the event set the record for the highest MMA pay-per-view buys, as well as the largest live gate in Nevada. The fight also drew controversy for a post-fight brawl that broke out between the Khabib and McGregor teams.

Background[edit]

Nurmagomedov(left) had an undefeated record of 26–0, while McGregor(right) was the first fighter to win titles in two divisions simultaneously. This fight has been dubbed 'the biggest in UFC history' by organization president Dana White.[5]

The event was headlined by a UFC Lightweight Championship bout between the undefeated current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor.[6] McGregor captured the lightweight title at UFC 205, when he was the reigning featherweight champion.[7] McGregor never defended the title, as he took some time off in 2017 due to the birth of his first son and later venturing himself in a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (in which he lost).[8][9] The UFC originally planned an interim title bout between Nurmagomedov and The Ultimate Fighter: Team Lesnar vs. Team dos Santos welterweight winner Tony Ferguson, but it was canceled due to Khabib having medical issues related to his weight cut on weigh-in day.[10] Ferguson eventually won the interim title at UFC 216 against Kevin Lee.[11] Ferguson was then expected to meet Nurmagomedov at UFC 223, with the winner being crowned the undisputed champion (as McGregor would be stripped of the title as soon as the bout took place). In turn, it was scrapped once again (fourth time) as Ferguson got injured, and after several possibilities for an opponent, Nurmagomedov eventually won the vacant title against Al Iaquinta.[12][13] That card was also marked by an attack on a bus containing several fighters scheduled to compete at the event (including Nurmagomedov and two teammates), performed by McGregor and his crew.[14]

Jussier Formiga was previously scheduled to face Sergio Pettis in January 2017 at UFC Fight Night: Rodríguez vs. Penn. However, Formiga pulled out of the fight for undisclosed reasons.[15] The pairing was rescheduled for this event.[16]

On October 1, Sean O'Malley announced that he was pulled from a bout against José Alberto Quiñónez after failing a US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) drug test.[17] In turn, promotion officials elected to remove Quiñónez from the card and he will be rescheduled for a future event.[18]

Records set[edit]

At the T-Mobile Arena, the event drew an attendance of 20,034 fans, generating a live gate revenue of $17.2 million. It set the record for the highest ever mixed martial arts attendance and live gate in Nevada.[1] It also set the record for the biggest MMA pay-per-view event, with 2.4million buys in the United States.[3]

Viewership[edit]

In Nurmagomedov's home country of Russia, the fight set the viewership record for the country's most-watched MMA event. On Russian channel Match TV, where the event began airing at 05:00 MSK and the Nurmagomedov-McGregor fight after 07:00 MSK, the fight was watched by more than 4million viewers and reached a peak viewership rating of 67.5% for the time slot in the capital Moscow.[22] In the United Kingdom, the fight was watched by 1,282,500 viewers on pay television subscription channel BT Sport 1, including 260,700 viewers for the live 01:00 broadcast and 1,021,800 viewers for the 06:00 replay.[23]

Nurmagomedov-McGregor post-fight controversy[edit]

Seconds after the fight, Nurmagomedov climbed out of the octagon and charged toward McGregor's cornerman Dillon Danis. Soon after, McGregor and Abubakar Nurmagomedov (cousin of Khabib) also tried to climb out of the octagon, but a scuffle broke out between them after McGregor punched Abubakar, who then punched him back.[24] Back in the octagon, McGregor was then attacked by two of Nurmagomedov's cornermen: Zubaira Tukhugov and Esed Emiragaev.[25]

As a result of the incident, Nurmagomedov's payment for the fight was withheld by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) pending an investigation into his actions.[21] Tukhugov was scheduled to fight on October 27 at UFC Fight Night: Volkan vs. Smith against Artem Lobov, McGregor's teammate who was confronted by Nurmagomedov in April 2018.[26]

Nurmagomedov appeared at the post-fight interview and apologized to the NSAC, saying he was provoked by the McGregor team's trash-talk targeting his family, nation, and religion, as well as the UFC 223 bus incident.[27] Nurmagomedov later told Russian media that he was triggered by a number of insults he heard from Danis during the match, including anti-Muslim slurs.[28] Danis, however, has denied that he made anti-Muslim slurs during the match.[29]

The NSAC filed a formal complaint against both McGregor and Nurmagomedov and the final hearing was initially scheduled to take place in November.[30] On October 12, they announced both fighters received a suspension for ten days come October 15 and a hearing would be held on October 24.[31] On October 24, the NSAC unanimously voted to release half of Nurmagomedov's payout immediately.[32] The commission also voted to issue temporary suspensions for both fighters and ordered them to appear in person for a further hearing in December to resolve the case.[33]

On January 29, 2019, the NSAC announced a nine month suspension for Nurmagomedov and a $500,000 fine. The agreement also includes a potential suspension reduction of up to three months if he delivers to the commission a public service announcement on anti-bullying. To receive the reduction, the commission must approve the PSA and its distribution plan. Additionally, Nurmagomedov can only receive credit based on the time he submits the PSA. McGregor was suspended for six months and given a $50,000 fine. In separate agreements, Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Tukhugov were each suspended one year for their roles in the melee. All suspensions are retroactive to the day of the event.[34] A few days later, Nurmagomedov stated that he would not opt to do the PSA.[35] Danis was suspended for seven months and fined $7,500, also retroactive to the day of the event.[36] On May 22, 2019, NSAC reduced the suspensions by 35 days which allowed Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Tukhugov to be eligible to compete again on September 1, 2019.[37]

UFC 232: Jones vs. Gustafsson 2 was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that was held on December 29, 2018 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.[3][4]

Background[edit]

A UFC Light Heavyweight Championship bout between former champion Jon Jones and former title challenger Alexander Gustafsson headlined this event.[5] As the current divisional champion Daniel Cormier is focusing on defending his UFC Heavyweight Championship, the promotion has indicated that he would be stripped of his title and that the winner of the proposed Jones/Gustafsson bout would become the undisputed champion.[5] Jones and Gustafsson have fought previously in September of 2013 at UFC 165 with Jones defending his title by unanimous decision.[6] The rematch was previously booked to headline UFC 178 in September of 2014, but the pairing was scrapped after Gustafsson tore his right meniscus and lateral collateral ligament.[7][8] A day before the event, Cormier relinquished his title as he said 'I'd rather walk away this way, than have the history books say I was stripped'.[9]

The event was originally expected to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, part of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area. However on December 23, the event was moved to The Forum in Inglewood, California due to a Jones' drug testing abnormality stemming from earlier that month. The test found a trace amount of turinabol in Jones' system, the same substance he tested positive for in 2017 that led to the 15-month suspension he recently was cleared from in order to fight this week. Because the Nevada State Athletic Commission does not have proper time to investigate in order to keep Jones cleared to fight in Las Vegas, the UFC decided to move the entire event to Inglewood as the California State Athletic Commission would grant Jones a licence. UFC VP of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky said USADA, in consultation with other organizations, believes the test is a 'pulsing' effect and not a new ingestion of the substance that he tested positive for after UFC 214 in July 2017.[10]

Cyborg (left) had a record of 20–1 (1), with her only loss dating back to 2005 when she made her professional debut. Meanwhile, Nunes (right) had three title defenses and a 16–4 record. This was the first time in UFC history that two current female champions faced each other.

A UFC Women's Featherweight Championship bout between current champion Cris Cyborg (who is also a former Strikeforce Women's Featherweight Champion and Invicta FC Featherweight Champion) and current UFC Women's Bantamweight ChampionAmanda Nunes took place at the event.[11] Nunes became the first woman to be champion in two divisions simultaneously and third fighter overall (after Conor McGregor at UFC 205 and Daniel Cormier at UFC 226), as well as the sixth person overall to win a title in different divisions. This was the fourth time in UFC history that champions in different divisions fought for the same title, following UFC 94, UFC 205 and UFC 226.[11]

A women's flyweight bout between Sijara Eubanks and Jessica Eye was expected to take place at this event, but Eubanks was pulled from the bout on October 2 in favor of a headliner for the vacant UFC Women's Flyweight Championship against former UFC Women's Bantamweight Championship challenger Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 230.[12][13] However, that fight was canceled a week later.[14] Eubanks remained on the card at UFC 230 and fought against former title challenger Roxanne Modafferi, while Eye found a new opponent at UFC 231.[15]

Tom Duquesnoy was expected to face Nathaniel Wood at the event. However, Duquesnoy pulled out of the fight on November 12 citing a rib injury.[16] Wood then faced Andre Ewell.[17]

A bantamweight bout between Brian Kelleher and Montel Jackson was initially slated to take place at UFC 230. However the fight was cancelled on the day of the event due to a medical issue for Kelleher and was rescheduled for this event.[18] At the weigh-ins, Jackson weighed in at 137 lbs, 1 pound over the bantamweight non-title fight limit of 136 lbs. He was fined 20% of his fight purse and his bout against Kelleher proceeded at catchweight.[19]

Aftermath[edit]

On January 23, 2019, it was reported that Walt Harris failed a fight-night drug test and was temporarily suspended by the CSAC. He tested positive for LGD-4033, a muscle-wasting medication in the same family of selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) like ostarine.[23] On February 28, Harris was suspended for 4 months (retroactive to the day of the fight) and fined $4,000 by the CSAC for the failed drug test, as he was able prove that he ingested the substance via a tainted supplement. His fight against former UFC Heavyweight ChampionAndrei Arlovski was overturned to a no contest.[24]
