Editorial Reviews

“McCarthy employs a neo-Biblical rhetoric, a soaring, pulsing…Always stirring diction without parallel in American writing today.” USA Today
“Blood Meridian…seems to me clearly the major esthetic achievement of any living American writer.”New York Observer
“The book reads like a conflation of the Inferno, the Iliad, and Moby-Dick…An extraordinary, breathtaking achievement.' Independent (London)
“If what we call ‘horror’ can be seen as including any literature that has dark, horrific subject matter, then Blood Meridian is, in this reviewer’s estimation, the best horror novel ever written. It’s a perverse, picaresque Western…Imagine the imagery of Sam Peckinpah and Heironymus Bosch as written by William Faulkner, and you’ll have just an inkling of this novel’s power. From the opening scenes about a fourteen-year-old Tennessee boy who joins the band of hunters to the extraordinary, mythic ending, this is an American classic about extreme violence.” Amazon.com, editorial review

Story

Weird...beautiful...violent

This audio book had a strange effect on me. Upon first hearing it what was most noticeable is the gorgeous (albeit violent) prose of Cormac McCarthy. Yet's that's a given. The symbolism of this story isn't subtle, it's really not much more than the battle of good vs evil in the middle of desert. That's been done before by other authors. After I first heard this audio book a couple of years ago I thought 'well that wasn't very good...I didn't really like that at all'. Something weird happened. The recollection of the experience of hearing it stuck with me. I now think the visceral impact of the book itself needed time to sink in. Not only was the book unforgettable, but I now remember where I was and what the circumstances were when I heard Richard Poe narrating it for the first time. This book stays with you long after you are done listening to it. It certainly deserves revisiting. I might even call the book 'great'.
